If you are not one of the 200,000 people expected to visit Gettysburg next week during the 150th anniversary of the battle, then there are plenty of ways to experience it vicariously through others online.

We already mentioned how there are some places you follow the actions through blogs, tweets, and Facebook. In addition, I will be there, tweeting photos from my experience.

However, there are even more ways to experience the commemorations. C-SPAN3 will be there, providing live coverage of speeches, talks, and battlefield walks. The coverage begins this Sunday (June 30).

One of the key steps for any historian is to know the author. This goes for primary and secondary sources, and especially modern works. In the case of the latter, it can be difficult, because most authors do not provide autobiographies in their works.

Our scrutiny as historians must remain high at all times, even when the source is in another language, but especially when the source tells a new, intriguing story that we only dreamed of being true.

Every historian and every editor should know Stephanie Harvey’s name. Regardless of your field of interest, historians have to be on the lookout for deceptively legitimate claims, especially when we want them to be true.
