What constitutes critical infrastructure (CI)?

Critical infrastructure consists of physical and virtual systems and networks. This includes electricity, transportation systems, water, food, farmers, first responders, hospitals, stores, banks, communication systems, and the Internet. It involves any of the systems that supply, support, and drive the nation’s economy, health, and security.

By designating a specific month to focus on these systems and services, it reaffirms the commitment to the nation to provide for the safety, security, and preservation of these critical elements. It also builds an awareness and appreciation of the impact these elements have on everyday life across the United States.

Focus & goals

This year’s focus is on the [link url=”https://amuedge.com/the-link-between-physical-security-and-cybersecurity/” title=”interdependence of physical and cyber systems”], including the electrical grid, water supplies, health services, communications, banking, and databases. It also supports the building of public-private partnerships to increase resilience.

Other goals that are meant to help increase the focus on critical infrastructure include helping to foster innovative methods to ensure a robust resilience across these systems and services. Efforts also focus on the investment needed to ensure their security and safety.
