Starting a New Career in 2017

For many people, a new year is a time to get a fresh start and to reboot their stagnant careers. Most of us have strong hopes and high expectations for our careers, but few people actually put their plans into action. If you are one of the job-seeking hopefuls who have yet to kick your plans into gear, consider taking the following steps:

  • Assess your current situation and understand your reasons for wanting to make a career move. Thinking about your motivation is important to ensure you don’t find yourself in the same stagnant job situation 12 months from now. Jumping from one job to another isn’t necessarily a good career path if the new job doesn’t contribute to your professional growth.
  • Visualize your career path in the next five years to identify your dream role and the companies that support it. Now is the time to map out your new career path to ensure a successful journey. Turn your dream into reality by taking action and doing the necessary research to learn about the skills and education you will need to earn that job and title.
  • Research the job skills that are necessary for the career you want. Look for job openings that list all the requirements employers seek. Use those job descriptions to choose the experiences that will prepare you for a new role.
  • Move closer to your new career goal by choosing jobs that support your career journey and help you gain the necessary skillsets and knowledge. Be open to volunteer opportunities, as they are sometimes the best way to gain relevant experience.

There is no telling how long your career journey will be. Only one thing is for certain: you must make a commitment to take the necessary steps to progress. Taking concrete action will ensure that a decision you could face in the future about a new career move will be a decision that you shaped for yourself.
