No Veteran Left Behind: Student Groups for Veterans to Join

By Matt Peeling

If there is one credo that has stood the test of time within the ranks of the United States military branches, it is the credo that says that no service member will be left behind. This credo stands true with American Military University and American Public University’s chapter of the Student Veterans of America. In fact, the chapter’s credo is “No Veteran Left Behind”.

This one belief, whether drilled into us or bred into us because of our family’s military heritage, is the one belief above all others that we hold close. That, our desire to help active duty military members successfully transfer from active duty to post military life, and to see that all veterans succeed in their life goals are driving reasons for our desire to move our SVA chapter forward, grow its membership and to provide the resources to help our fellow veterans succeed in their educational and personal goals.

The number of resources that exist for chapter members is extensive. Resources such as the Virtual Veterans Center where both active duty and veterans can connect and interact with one another or connect with other veterans that serve as mentors and “have been there and done that”. Also available are links and postings to current issues such as tuition assistance, scholarship offerings, job coaching, resume writing opportunities and happenings with the National SVA to keep you informed.

To date the AMU and APU chapter of The Student Veterans of America is the largest chapter in the online learning community. My goal is to see that our chapter spans a wide number of veterans for support, and to grow this community in a positive and productive direction. This mission is one that we can accomplish and it only requires anyone with an interest in helping veterans succeed to join the chapter and help as much as he or she desires.

Membership is free and is open to AMU and APU students, veteran or not, student or alumnus. After completing your membership form and returning it to us you will receive a welcome letter and AMU or APU swag determined by which school you are attending. You will also receive access to our chapter on The Quad and access to the above mentioned Virtual Veterans Center. Future programs for SVA members in development include an AMU and APU Scholarship and a send a Veteran to Commencement program that will send one deserving veteran and a guest to commencement each year.

Let’s keep our chapter growing and show the world that veterans are leaders not only in the military but in life! If you’re a student at AMU or APU, sign up now in The Quad!
