Continue to Serve with Pride – Teaching

Recently Craig Gilman contributed an entry over at military1.com. For those of you who haven’t read Craig’s post on our blog, he is a Military Outreach Education Coordinator and Troops to Teacher’s Liaison at American Military University. He is also an adjunct professor who teaches COLL100 and for the School of Education. A veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps, he is a former certified secondary social studies teacher with an MS Education and MA International Relations from Old Dominion University.

Craig’s article speaks to the void left when some servicemembers transition out of the armed services but still want to serve the communities in which they live. Teaching is a great way to do that. Here is an excerpt from Craig’s post:

“Military service members who would like to continue to serve after separating from the armed forces should consider teaching. Individuals who have successfully served the country in uniform more than likely have the right skills to be successful teachers.

“There must be, within our Army, a sense of purpose. There must be a willingness to march a little farther, to carry a heavier load, to step out into the dark and the unknown for the safety and well-being of others.” – GEN Creighton Abrams

Teachers take on one of America’s most vital missions. They serve. First and foremost, they serve their students, but they also serve their schools, communities, states and the nation. And there are jobs.”
