A Salute to Veterans…and Continuing Education

Today is Veterans Day. A time when we salute those who have fought in local and foreign wars on behalf of our country. The history behind the holiday is quite noble in itself.

According the the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, even though World War I was officially ended on paper with the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919 fighting had actually ceased months earlier between the Allied nations and Germany. It went into effect on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Because of this informal treaty November 11, 1918 is usually regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” “The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, making November 11 a legal holiday.”

The purpose of Veterans Day, as stated in an Act approved May 13, 1928, “is a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day.” This “Armistice Day” was to be primarily for WWI veterans, changed in 1954 to include WWII soldiers as well. And with the approval of Public Law 380 on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to “honor American veterans of all wars.”

From OnlineLearningTips.com, on behalf of American Public University and American Military University, we want to salute veterans who have given so much to protect the rights of our country. And in honor of this most worthy holiday today we are showcasing a couple of our recently graduated veterans:

Rebecca Roch
A single mother of three recently graduated from American Military University (AMU) with a Master of Public Administration degree. She served nine years with the Connecticut Army National Guard and now currently works for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

Daniel Zent
Senior Master Sgt. Zent is part of a small community of experts within the U.S. Air Force emergency managers. He went back to school and earned his Bachelor’s in Emergency and Disaster Management at AMU. Zent has also served in the Air National Guard, and the U.S. Army.

Congratulations to our students who have recently obtained a degree with us, and those who are still in pursuit. We salute those who served, and continue to do so.

Happy Veterans Day!
