American Military University (AMU) is proud to highlight our three new doctorate program faculty members: Dr. Melissa Schnyder, Dr. Matthew Crosston, and Dr. Elise Carlson-Rainer. Read more about AMU’s newest doctoral team members below.

Dr. Melissa Schnyder

Dr. Melissa Schnyder is an Associate Professor of International Relations in the School of Security and Global Studies at American Public University System. Dr. Schnyder’s research is focused in the areas of European politics, comparative immigration and asylum policies, and the political participation of non-state actors in policy making processes. She has held visiting faculty and researcher positions at the University of Kent Brussels School of International Studies, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels), and the German Marshall Fund of the United States Transatlantic Center in Brussels, Belgium. She was a Fulbright Fellow to the European Union, and has participated in transatlantic symposiums on immigration and asylum. Her research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Contemporary European Research, Journal of European Integration, Social Movement Studies, Interface: A Journal for and about Social Movements, and includes a book published by Roman and Littlefield International Press. Dr. Schnyder earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Dr. Matthew Crosston

Dr. Matthew Crosston is Vice Chairman at Modern Diplomacy and Editor-in-Chief of the Global South policy initiative, the Journal of Rising Powers. He is Senior Research Fellow for the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, Israel; Senior Advisor for the Research Institute for European and American Studies in Athens, Greece; Senior Fellow at the China Eurasia Council for Political and Strategic Research in Nanjing, China; and was the first American invited to conduct a political analysis blog for the Russian International Affairs Council in Moscow, Russia. He has a B.A. from Colgate University, an M.A. from the University of London, a Ph.D. from Brown University, and completed his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto. He has published top-tier research that has impacted real world decision-making in the US and beyond. His established work in cyber (seven major pieces published in the previous six years) has made required reading course lists at U.S. CYBERCOM and his concept of ‘active cyber defense’ has gained legitimacy not only within the American Intelligence Community but has been openly supported by Israel’s Mossad. In addition to his peer-reviewed publications, he has published more than 100 analytical editorials and commissioned opinion pieces that represent the full spectrum of global security and leadership in the 21st century, as well as being interviewed by media organizations across Europe, Asia, the Post-Soviet space, and the Middle East. His works have been translated into Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, Hebrew, Spanish, Turkish, Farsi, Greek, and Uzbek.

Dr. Elise Carlson-Rainer

Dr. Elise Carlson-Rainer has worked with the World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Department of State. With the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Carlson-Rainer worked to shape U.S. human rights policy in North Africa and Gulf countries, drafted the annual human rights reports, and managed human rights programs in the Middle East region. After 10 years in diplomacy, Carlson-Rainer wrote her Ph.D. dissertation regarding LGBTI rights in U.S. and Swedish foreign policy. Dr. Carlson-Rainer was a Presidential Management Fellow in Washington D.C., and a Fulbright Fellow in Stockholm, Sweden. Her research interests include humanitarian intervention, U.S. and E.U. foreign policy, peace and conflict resolution, human rights and governance, and diplomacy. Dr. Carlson-Rainer has published in numerous outlets including Foreign Policy, The Global Studies Journal, and E-International Relations. She served as Senior Editor for over 20 U.S. State Department human rights reports and the U.S. State Department’s International Religious Freedom reports from 2005-2015. Dr. Carlson-Rainer received her Ph.D in International Studies from the University of Washington, Seattle.

AMU’s applied doctoral degree in global security – along with the university’s other doctorate offering (the applied doctoral degree in strategic intelligence) – are the only programs of their kind taught online by an accredited university; each program is backed by decades of experience led by a highly credentialed faculty working in the field. AMU intends to add additional faculty members to its doctorate programs in the coming weeks, further bolstering its already robust panel of subject-matter experts.

About Dr. James Hess

Dr. James Hess is currently the Director of Doctoral Research Experiences at American Military University. Dr. Hess received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University where he studied improving analytical methodologies in counterinsurgency and counter-terrorism environments. He is currently studying the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence and terrorism as an International Relations Research Fellow with the University of Arizona’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
