Veteran of Men and WomenBy Dr. Oliver Hedgepeth

Our little town here had a parade on the Fourth of July and there was a young man waiting at the curb in the sweltering sun with two little girls. I’m a sucker for little kids. The girls were hot and sweaty and we had brought a small cooler with bottled water so we shared. As local servicemen marched by, the young man shared that his wife is serving in Afghanistan.

He could have been angry and bitter at his wife’s deployment, which means he has get supper on the table, help with homework, and ferry the girls to activities, but he said he’s grateful for the role model his wife is for their daughters.

Currently, the Veterans Administration estimates that each day 22 veterans take their own lives, or over 8,000 annually. I personally know four veterans who have taken their own lives after losing a battle with PTSD. I decided to take action to help my fellow veterans who fought for this beautiful country defeat the demons of PTSD. I founded the Arooh Initiative to raise awareness that we are losing our nation’s heroes and they need our help.

Many of our veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of trauma suffered during their military service. Such disorders can adversely influence a veteran’s ability to control behavior and can lead to impulsivity, disinhibition, anger, and aggression. Unfortunately, such behavior can contribute to veterans violating the law. Learn more about the creation of veteran treatment courts, which provide the criminal justice system a way to respond proactively by assisting veterans rather than punishing them.

Any form of philanthropy can be a learning experience if you pay attention. Whether you’re opting to give up a piece of yourself, your time, a possession, or your money it is important to pay attention to the effort involved and the potential takeaways. My recent experience with Wreaths Across America has completely altered how I’ll look at seasonal philanthropy forever.
