After I finished seminary back in 2005, I was looking for the “next big thing” in my life. I was teaching part-time at a local community college and also serving as a part-time chaplain, but neither of these looked like a permanent fixture in my life. While I was browsing the internet for various options, I happened along a school named American Public University. At the time I’d never heard of it, but they were offering a political philosophy class online, and it sounded intriguing.

Student loan debt is a major issue, with numbers exploding over $1.1 trillion. Yes, the unpaid student loan debt in this country is over $1 trillion, an absolutely mind-boggling number. This number only encompasses FSA loans, so private loan debt would push that number to astronomical proportions.

Research shows that the average student loan debt of veterans hovers around $56,000. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 hovers near 21 percent.

That combination of high student loan debt and few jobs has certainly been troublesome for some military veterans. As author Hayley Fox points out in this article for TakePart, military programs exist to help those in educational debt, but gaps in coverage remain, and the system can be confusing and hard to navigate.
