  1. A powerful [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/latest-rescuers-search-collapsed-buildings-italy-43170722″ title=”earthquake rocked central and southern Italy”] Sunday morning, toppling buildings, destroying homes, and crumbling historic churches. The magnitude 6.6 quake as recorded by the U.S. Geological Service was centered near Norcia, in a mountainous area between Marche and Umbria. Strong aftershocks last Wednesday resulting from the deadly August 24 quake in the same region emptied the area of residents and likely contributed [link url=”http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/31/world/europe/italy-earthquake-norcia.html” title=”to helping save lives and minimize injuries”]. Italy’s Civil Protection Agency reported 8,000 people in shelters by Sunday evening and expected to be assisting at least 3,000 more individuals overnight.
  2. The earthquake in Italy was just one of several earthquakes that occurred over the weekend. According to the U.S. Geological Service, [link url=”http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000735j#dyfi” title=”a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck southwest of Bogota, Colombia”] on Sunday, in a mountainous region. There have been no reports of injuries from the quake. To the south, beginning last Thursday, a series of smaller quakes have impacted regions along the coast of Chile, including [link url=”http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us100072gn#executive” title=”a 5.9 magnitude quake on Thursday”], a 5.1 quake on Saturday, a 5.2 earthquake on Sunday, and early Monday morning, another 5.1 quake. Majority of the earthquakes in Chile have been seated in areas near the cities of [link url=”http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000736z#executive” title=”Valparaiso and Antofagasta”]. No injuries have been reported.

In Chicago, IL on Saturday, just before take off, [link url=”http://fox8.com/2016/10/28/american-airlines-plane-engine-catches-fire-at-ohare-airport/” title=”fire erupted from the right side of an American Airlines Boeing 767 airplane”]. Pilots aborted the take off and passengers were quickly evacuated from the aircraft using the emergency exits and slides. [link url=”http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Possible-Plane-Crash-Reported-at-OHare-Airport-399071991.html” title=”Smoke filled the cabin about thirty seconds”] after the fire erupted, and one flight attendant and approximately twenty passengers were taken to area hospitals after suffering minor injuries.

The plan skidded along the runway prior to catching fire, and after it stopped, an explosion blew off a portion of the left wing. Michael Vance — the suspect who opened fire and shot and injured two police officers and killed two family members near Wellston, OK last Sunday — [link url=”http://www.koco.com/article/medical-examiner-shares-secrets-from-morgue/7663621″ title=”was killed during a shoot-out with law enforcement on Sunday”]. Authorities had been hunting Vance since the shootings last week when the trail went cold–until a farmer reported seeing Vance on Highway 34 near the Washita River last night. The [link url=”http://www.cbsnews.com/news/oklahoma-fugitive-michael-vance-dead-in-shootout-with-officers-sources/” title=”Dewey County Sheriff received bullet wounds in his shoulder and arm”] during a confrontation with the suspect about a half hour earlier and was being treated at a local hospital.

On Sunday, fire crews worked to contain a fire in Cherokee County that consumed more than 10 acres. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, since Friday morning, fire fighting crews have responded to 92 wildfires and 16 illegal burns. On Sunday, fire fighters were also fighting another fire in Whitfield County, on Rocky Face Mountain, that has been burning for five days and covers about 325 acres. An American Airlines flight that departed from Los Angeles International Airport bound for Toronto, Canada Sunday morning [link url=”http://kdvr.com/2016/10/30/american-airlines-flight-diverted-to-denver-international-airport-due-to-smoke-in-the-cabin/” title=”had to divert mid-flight”] after smoke filled the cabin. The plane diverted to Denver International Airport and landed safely at around 11:40 a.m. local time. Fire fighters were called to the plane in order to ensure its safety, while maintenance crews investigated the cause of the smoke. Officials were unsure if anyone onboard needed treatment for smoke inhalation.
