EDM Wednesday Briefing: N.Korea Threatens Guam With Missiles; China 6.5 Quake

Emergency and disaster management briefing for August 9, 2017: North Korea threatens Guam and warns of nuclear war with America; strong quake hits China; Missouri drone project aids emergency managers; President Trump weighs in on America’s opioid addiction crisis; flash floods in England; and flooding in Houston results in two-dozen water rescues.

  1. North Korea has threatened a missile strike on the tiny United States territory of Guam. The rhetoric from the rogue state was in response to President Donald Trump’s Tuesday remarks in which he stated “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.” According to other reports, North Korea warned on Wednesday that its focus was not just Guam and it would hit the US mainland with preemptive nuclear strikes if they saw any sign that the US planned to strike North Korea first.[relink url=”https://amuedge.com/improvised-nuclear-devices-guide/” url2=”https://amuedge.com/otto-warmbier-released-north-korea-coma-know-medical-state/” url3=”https://amuedge.com/qa-analysis-of-recent-events-in-north-korea/”]
  2. An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale struck China’s Sichuan Province on Tuesday night leaving at least 19 people dead and buildings in rubble. The quake struck near Jiuzhaigou, or Jiuzhai Valley, a popular national park known for its magnificent waterfalls and karst formations that attracts tourists from China and elsewhere. Another 6.3 magnitude quake struck in a sparsely populated area on Wednesday morning.
  3. A group of licensed drone pilots in Missouri has planned and developed a drone-assisted emergency response system that could be useful in assisting in a variety of emergency and disaster situations. Nine pilots and numerous drones will be positioned at two locations to help local Emergency Management personnel find vehicle crashes on busy roadways and monitor crowds at large viewing sites.

  4. President Donald Trump emphasized the need for improved law enforcement to help fight America’s opioid addiction problem Tuesday. “Strong law enforcement is absolutely vital to having a drug-free society,” Trump told reporters from his New Jersey golf club. The commission Trump appointed to investigate the prescription and illegal drug epidemic, headed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, recommended last week that the president declare a national emergency; however, its report promoted and recommended new medical solutions, not law enforcement.
  5. Heavy rain has brought flash floods to parts of the east coast of England, with further torrential rain in the upcoming forecast. Flash flooding hit communities in the East Riding area of Yorkshire and also in north-east Lincolnshire. There was 3 feet of standing water in some towns and villages.

  6. Heavy rains also hit the Houston area – causing widespread flooding. Torrential downpours stranded motorists and pedestrians, resulting in at least two-dozen water rescues on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, this is one of those Texas flood events that’s part of living in Southeast Texas,” said Michael Walter, a spokesman for Houston’s Office of Emergency Management.
