EDM Monday Briefing: Terror Attack in Canada, Delta Airlines Outage, Tennessee Shooting

Emergency and disaster management briefing for January 30, 2017: A mass shooting at a mosque in Canada kills six and injures at least eight, a second day of flight cancellations for Delta Airlines after a system outage, 10 people shot in high-school party held at National Guard Armory in Tennessee, search crews looking for missing Missouri woman find a second male body, severe weather is causing increased ocean flooding and high tides in California, a devastating fire destroys a mosque in Victoria, Texas, landslides and severe flooding inundate the Sulawesi region in India for the second time in just three months, and a night of violence in Minnesota leaves two dead and seven injured.

A mass shooting at a mosque in Quebec City, Canada has left at least [link url=”https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/29/world/americas/quebec-city-mosque-shooting-canada.html” title=”six people dead and eight others injured”]. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the shooting a terrorist attack. The shooting occurred at about 8:00 p.m. and [link url=”http://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/quebec-mosque-shooting-vigil-planned-in-montreal-after-terrorist-attack” title=”authorities have confirmed that two suspects are in custody”]. The system was restored after midnight but some of the cancellations were not reflected on the airline’s website, airport information or its mobile app.  A total of [link url=”http://www.wsj.com/articles/delta-air-lines-cancelled-more-flights-monday-1485781131″ title=”170 flights on Sunday were cancelled due the outage”] that lasted at least five hours.

A shooting at a high-school party being held at a National Guard Armory in Tennessee [link url=”http://wreg.com/2017/01/28/10-teens-injured-in-brownsville-shooting-at-national-guard-armory/” title=”injured 10 people on Saturday, including two juveniles”]. Brownsville, Tennessee police responded to a shots fired call at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Saturday at the Armory after a fight broke out.   4. Another week of searching for a missing Missouri woman has turned up a second male body in just two weeks. Crews searching for the missing woman, Jessica Runions, [link url=”http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/missouri-family-searching-missing-woman-find-remains-male-article-1.2954637″ title=”found a decomposing body in a creek bed “]almost two weeks ago whom authorities have identified as a 21-year-old man who had been missing from Raytown since November. [link url=”http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/crews-missing-missouri-woman-find-man-body-article-1.2958824″ title=”Last Saturday, search crews found another male body”] in fields and brush while combing the area along a southeast Kansas City roadway. Authorities have not yet identified the body, but are investigating the death as suspicious.

A winter filled with strong storms and heavy rains has [link url=”https://phys.org/news/2017-01-storms-preview-sea-rise-california-roads.html” title=”worsened ocean flooding and high tides”] in Vallejo, California, and experts are blaming the impacts on climate change. In a state many believe to be a leader in the fight against climate change, California is struggling trying to determine which locations, landmarks, and cities to save – and which to abandon- and where to get the billions of dollars it will likely need for the rescues. After noticing flames and billowing smoke coming from the The Islamic Center of Victoria, a convenience store clerk called the fire department at around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday. The mosque was targeted by hate crimes several years ago, and just last week was the victim of a burglary. Assistance in [link url=”http://time.com/4652725/texas-mosque-fire/” title=”determining the cause”] was requested by the Victoria Fire Marshal, Tom Legler who called on the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the Texas Fire Marshal’s Office.

In India, [link url=”http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/01/27/natural-disasters-loom-large-in-sulawesi.html” title=”floods have devastated areas in the Gorontalo province”], in Sulawesi, submerging homes in 12-32 inches of water, with more flooding expected to occur. Landslides have sent debris cascading down hillsides causing piles of bamboo, stones, and soil to block main roads, delaying the delivery of aid to the hardest hit northern Sulawesi region. Meteorologists expect the heavy rains to continue through February. A night of violence in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Crystal, Minnesota leaves [link url=”http://www.kare11.com/news/crime/shootings-leave-2-dead-7-injured/394474173″ title=”two people dead and at least seven injured”]. The deaths resulted from three separate shooting incidents. In St. Paul, two men were rushed to the hospital after being found shot outside a bar, where one individual later died from his injuries. Four males were taken to the hospital in Crystal after police found them suffering from gunshot wounds. Minneapolis police were also called to a home Sunday where they found one man dead of a gunshot wound to the head, and another person in an alley outside the home who was shot in the leg.
