Emergency and disaster management briefing for January 29, 2018: An early morning shooting leaves four people dead at a car wash in Pennsylvania, a Detroit police officer has died after being shot in the line of duty, video reveals shots were fired at random by student in Kentucky school shooting, Panera Bread voluntarily recalls cream cheese products after testing reveals Listeria presence, a motorist in Mississippi was shot and killed when she tried to run over police officers, 200 firefighters fought a waste paper facility fire in Connecticut that continues to burn, a small plane makes an emergency landing on California’s Costa Mesa Freeway, and winter weather warnings and advisories have been issued in Michigan and Massachusetts.

A shooting at a car wash in Belcroft, Pennsylvania early Sunday morning has left [link url=”https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fayette-county-pennsylvania-melcroft-car-wash-shooting-timothy-smith-live-updates-2018-01-28/” title=”four people dead and two others injured”], including the shooter. The gunman, identified as Timothy Smith, 28, who was heavily armed, is on life support at the hospital after he suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and [link url=”http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-pennsylvania-car-wash-shooting-20180128-story.html” title=”according to officials is unlikely to survive”] what may be a self-inflicted injury. All of the victims were in their twenties and reportedly, the incident may have been driven by jealousy.

The officer, Glenn Doss, Jr., 25, was shot when the suspect, Decharlos Brooks, 43, opened fire on the squad car as it arrived at the home, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/28/detroit-officer-shot-in-head-last-week-dies.html” title=”then barricaded himself in the home until police threw tear gas inside”]. Doss, who was struck in the head and chest and was rushed to the hospital by his partner, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The information was released after authorities viewed security cameras installed at the school. Officials noted that [link url=”https://www.reuters.com/article/us-kentucky-shooting/kentucky-school-shooting-suspect-did-not-target-victims-local-prosecutor-idUSKBN1FF2WM” title=”three security cameras clearly captured the incident as it unfolded”] in the common area of Marshall County High School.

The company decided to voluntarily issue the recall after samples from one variety of its 2 oz. cream cheese tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on a single production day. The company stated that there have been no reported illnesses and the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution and concern for their customers, [link url=”https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/01/28/1313270/0/en/Panera-Bread-Preemptively-Recalls-All-2-oz-and-8-oz-Cream-Cheese-Products.html” title=”who are being told to discard the product and contact Panera for a full refund”].

A motorist in Jackson, Mississippi was shot and killed [link url=”https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/police-driver-dead-after-trying-to-hit-mississippi-officers/2018/01/27/b8cbe40c-03c0-11e8-86b9-8908743c79dd_story.html?utm_term=.974148da1ea2″ title=”after she attempted to run over police with her vehicle during a traffic stop”]. The suspect, Crystaline Barnes, 21, reportedly forced another motorist off the road, and when police stopped her, she attempted to flee. Barnes put her car in reverse then [link url=”https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-police-shooting/motorist-shot-dead-after-trying-to-run-over-mississippi-police-officers-idUSKBN1FH05T” title=”drove at one of the police officers”], who had just gotten out of a vehicle, then aimed at the initial responding officer, both of whom fired into her car, which then crashed into a utility pole.

A fire that broke out at the Willimantic Waste Paper Company in Willimantic, Connecticut [link url=”http://wtnh.com/2018/01/29/massive-fire-under-control-at-willimantic-waste-paper-co-area-schools-closed/” title=”continues to burn more than 24 hours after it began”], closing area schools and roads due to lingering and heavy smoke. Area residents downwind were cautioned to remain indoors, and water quality in the Willimantic River, along with air quality, are being monitored by workers from the Department of Engery & Environmental Protection (DEEP).

A small plane traveling from San Diego to Van Nuys, California, [link url=”http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-emergency-landing-freeway-20180128-story.html” title=”made an emergency landing on the 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa on Sunday evening after experiencing engine failure”]. The pilot, Izzy Slod, landed his Beechcraft G33 on the freeway after strong winds prevented the aircraft from being able to get to the beach or the closest runway at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. Slod, and experienced pilot, landed the plane safely on the northbound lanes of the freeway, and according to first responders, [link url=”https://www.ocregister.com/2018/01/28/plane-lands-safely-on-55-freeway-in-costa-mesa/” title=”was able to avoid all vehicles and obstacles”], and did not cause any collisions or injuries.

Meteorologists warn that snow accumulations of anywhere from 3-6 inches today will make the afternoon commute tricky, with limited visibility at times. On the East Coast, [link url=”https://www.capecod.com/cape-wide-news/winter-weather-advisory-4-pm-monday-through-10-am-tuesday/” title=”several weather advisories have also been issued for areas in Massachusetts”], including a winter weather advisory with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected, a wind advisory warning of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, and a coastal flooding advisory. All of the advisories are in effect until various times on Tuesday and residents are cautioned to be aware of updates to local weather conditions to ensure safety.
