EDM Friday Briefing: Kilauea Volcano Erupts in Hawaii, Nashville Mall Shooting

Emergency and disaster management briefing for May 4, 2018: Nine police officers were injured in an explosion during a SWAT standoff in Connecticut, Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday prompting mandatory evacuations, nine military crew members were killed when their C-130 crashed in Savannah, a massive and powerful dust storm in India kills 100 people amid high winds and lightning strikes, a shooting at a Nashville mall kills one, severe weather causes widespread damage in several Midwest states, an ATF agent was shot in the face during a joint mission with Chicago police, high wind advisories have been issued across the Great Lakes region, including in Michigan and New York.

On Wednesday, [link url=”https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/fiery-explosion-barricade-scene-injures-officers-54898791″ title=”a regional SWAT team responded to a domestic violence call”] that escalated into a SWAT standoff with a man barricaded inside a home in south central Connecticut. SWAT team members negotiated with the man, possibly the woman’s husband, for hours, until around 8:30 p.m., when a building on the property exploded. The explosion resulted in [link url=”http://www.newsweek.com/connecticut-swat-standoff-explosion-reported-north-haven-live-updates-909024″ title=”one death and injured nine police officers”], with all but two of the nine officers still remaining hospitalized as of Thursday.

Officials began closely monitoring the volcano after a series of small earthquakes rocked the Big Island this week. [link url=”https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/kilauea-earthquakes.html” title=”Hundreds of earthquakes”] occurred in the area of the volcano beginning Monday, most of which, according the U.S. Geological Survey, registered around a 2.0 magnitude, with one 5.0 quake on Thursday morning.

Nine military crew members of the Puerto Rican National Guard were killed when their [link url=”http://time.com/5264554/military-plane-savannah-crash-retirement/” title=”C-130 crashed onto a highway in Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday afternoon”]. The plane was being flown from Puerto Rico to Arizona, where it was set to be retired from service. The plane had stopped in Savannah for routine maintenance before it took off for the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Arizona and [link url=”http://abc13.com/9-killed-after-military-cargo-plane-crashed-in-georgia/3419289/” title=”subsequently crashed just after take off”].

A massive dust storm swept through the northern region of India, including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, on Wednesday night, [link url=”http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-43987209″ title=”killing more than 100 people”]. Most of the deaths resulted from intense winds, likely downbursts, that the storm generated which knocked over large structures and lightning strikes that killed or injured people in their paths. Officials were surprised by the scale and the intensity of the storm, that, according to the number of deaths caused by the dust storm, [link url=”https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/05/india-dust-storm-wind-fatalities-science-spd/” title=”makes it one of the deadliest in the nation”].

[link url=”https://abcnews.go.com/US/shooting-nashville-mall-leaves-victim-critically-injured-suspect/story?id=54917553″ title=”A shooting at a Nashville Mall on Thursday afternoon left one person dead”] after an argument between two men turned deadly. The incident occurred inside the Opry Mills Mall outside the Lids retail store when two men engaged in a physical altercation and one man pulled out a gun and shot Demarco Churchwell, 22, who later died at the hospital from his injuries. The man then surrendered to the person selling tickets for the Grand Ole Opry at a booth inside the mall, who happened to be a retired California police officer, [link url=”https://www.wral.com/police-shooting-at-nashville-mall-injuries-unclear/17528980/” title=”giving him the gun and asking the individual to call 911″].

Severe weather moving through the Midwest [link url=”https://abcnews.go.com/US/midwest-tornadoes-26-reported-monday/story?id=54901532″ title=”spawned numerous tornadoes across Kansas”], including at least one outside Kansas City, [link url=”http://fox4kc.com/2018/05/03/see-the-damage-left-behind-after-storms-hit-in-both-kansas-and-missouri/” title=”snapping trees, downing power lines, and damaging homes, businesses, and schools”]. A total of 16 tornadoes were reported Wednesday into Thursday across Kansas from storms that also produced large hail, heavy rain, and high winds. A federal agent working undercover for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives [link url=”http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-atf-agent-shot-20180504-story.html” title=”was shot in the face during a joint mission”] with Chicago police officers early Friday. The mission was part of a strike force formed last June to [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/05/04/atf-agent-shot-critically-injured-in-chicagos-south-side.html” title=”help stop the flow of illegal guns into the Chicago area”]. The officer was taken to Stroger Hospital with critical injuries and underwent surgery on Friday.

High wind advisories are being issued for areas across [link url=”https://www.clickondetroit.com/weather/metro-detroit-weather-wind-advisory-in-effect-with-50-60-mph-winds-possible-today” title=”Michigan and the Great Lakes”] and into New York as a strong weather system that produced severe weather, including tornadoes, in the Midwest moves into the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple advisories in Michigan and [link url=”https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Scattered-storms-possible-Friday-12887280.php” title=”New York”], noting that winds would be anywhere from 15 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching speeds of 50 to 60 mph. The advisories are in effect from Friday morning until Friday evening or Saturday morning.
