Emergency and disaster management briefing for June 2, 2017: Serious threat to security shuts down a college campus; explosion rips through a corn processing plant; incident on Malaysian Airlines; and other news.

A notification on the college’s website, which was also communicated via text and email, [link url=”http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article153815799.html” title=”indicated that a direct and violent threat to the safety and security of the school”] forced the closure. Late Thursday night, school officials announced that classes were also canceled for Friday and that a determination to reopen the school would be made as soon as possible.

A corn processing plant in Wisconsin was the scene of [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/injuries-reported-milling-plant-explosion-wisconsin/story?id=47762215″ title=”a deadly explosion late Wednesday night”]. The explosion killed two people and injured 14 others, collapsing a section of the mill complex in the multi-story plant and sparking a massive fire. A large rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf has [link url=”http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/01/world/iceberg-antarctic-larsen-c/” title=”expanded by nearly 11 miles over the last six days”], and its direction has changed. Scientists say that the rift is now only eight miles away from the edge of the ice, and its direction change moved it from running parallel with the ice shelf, to turning significantly toward the ice front. This change in direction strongly suggests that the shelf is getting ready to break away from Antarctica (calving), [link url=”https://www.yahoo.com/news/massive-crack-antarctic-ice-shelf-grows-11-miles-6-days-potentially-creating-worlds-largest-iceberg-215808971.html” title=”forming what will be the largest iceberg on record”], according to scientists who have been documenting the rift since 2014.

A Malaysian Airlines flight departing from Melbourne to Kuala-Lumpur was forced to return to the airport in Melbourne after [link url=”https://amuedge.com/man-plane-said-bomb-passengers-pounced/” title=”a man claiming to have a bomb on board”] grabbed a flight attendant and told everyone he was going to blow up the plane. The man, later identified as Manodh Marks, 25, also demanded to see the pilots, but was quickly subdued by several passengers. On Wednesday, [link url=”https://consumerist.com/2017/06/01/smuckers-recalls-three-brands-of-flour-over-possible-e-coli-contamination/” title=”Smucker’s announced the recall of three flours sold in the United States”] due to potential contamination by E. coli. The recalled brands include Temple, Swad, and Maya, which are produced by Ardent Mills, the company who issued a recall in March for Robin Hood brand flour that was distributed in Canada. Although no illnesses have been reported in the United States in conjunction with the Smucker’s brand flours, at least 30 cases of E. coli contamination occurred in Canada.

At a car dealership in Greenville, Texas, on Tuesday evening, a fugitive and the two bounty hunters that were tracking him, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/05/31/bounty-hunters-fugitive-shoot-each-other-dead-at-car-dealership-in-texas.html” title=”shot each other to death”]. The incident occurred in front of customers and employees, who quickly sought cover.
