DoD Focused on Cybersecurity

Defense Department bolstering cyber defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) continues to emphasize its new focus on cybersecurity and bolstering overall cyber defense capabilities of the U.S.

Two recent DoD initiatives highlight the recent shift to focus on cybersecurity: an event titled [link url=”https://amuedge.com/dod-invites-specialists-to-hack-the-pentagon/” title=”‘Hack the Pentagon'”] and the recent release of a [link url=”http://www.defense.gov/News/News-Releases/News-Release-View/Article/1009956/dod-announces-digital-vulnerability-disclosure-policy-and-hack-the-army-kick-off” title=”Digital Vulnerability Disclosure Policy”].

The “Hack the Pentagon” program was the first bug bounty initiative ever put out by the federal government. The program ended with vetted hackers uncovering at least 138 vulnerabilities in fewer than 25 days.

The U.S. Army recently announced that it is now following “Hack the Pentagon” with [link url=”https://amuedge.com/wants-hack-u-s-army/” title=”it’s own bug bounty program”]. The Army bug bounty initiative will involve more than 500 vetted security researchers, with a focus on [link url=”http://www.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/1010626/dod-army-ramp-up-cybersecurity-measures-with-new-initiatives” title=”operationally relevant websites”]. “Hack the Army” offers incentives to security personnel (hackers) who discover vulnerability within DoD networks and systems.

Digital Vulnerability Disclosure Policy

The DoD’s Vulnerability Disclosure Policy offers up a way for consistent reporting for all DoD websites.

The new guidelines provide a legal means for those who are testing to report weaknesses in any DoD public-facing systems. The policy guides on both testing and disclosure of vulnerabilities.

“We want to encourage computer security researchers to help us improve our defenses. This policy gives them a legal pathway to bolster the department’s cybersecurity and ultimately the nation’s security.” — [link url=”http://www.defense.gov/News/News-Releases/News-Release-View/Article/1009956″ title=”Ash Carter”], Secretary of Defense
