Is there really a cybersecurity talent shortfall?
The Department of Homeland Security recently addressed what it called cybersecurity job myths. More than anything, DHS looked to dispel the myth that a cybersecurity talent shortfall currently exists.
With a reported [link url=”https://amuedge.com/millennials-look-fill-cybersecurity-jobs-gap/” title=”one million unfilled cybersecurity jobs”] left unfilled in 2015, reports of the talent shortfall persist. But Angela Bailey, Chief Human Capital Officer at DHS, recently wrote a [link url=”https://cio.gov/how-to-snag-talent-to-fill-critical-cybersecurity-positions-at-your-agency/” title=”report”] taking aim at these reports.
According to Bailey, more than 14,000 people applied for cybersecurity positions at a [link url=”https://www.dhs.gov/blog/2016/07/29/innovative-hiring-dhs-cyber-and-tech-job-fair-recap” title=”recent DHS cybersecurity hiring event”]. While not all 14,000 had proper qualifications, she noted, many did.

More than 2,000 walk-ins
The recent cybersecurity hiring event reportedly brought more than 2,000 walk-ins. The day concluded, Bailey said, with more than 800 candidate interviews and nearly 150 tentative job offers.
All told, DHS ended up making 430 job offers, which is more than the original goal of filling about 350 positions.
Fact or fiction?
Bailey stressed that DHS’ success at the cybersecurity hiring event resulted from acting “collaboratively, quickly, and decisively.” Other organizations looking to hire cybersecurity talent, she said, could see similar results by employing a similar strategy.
Government organizations continue to increase focus on cyber defense as 2016 nears an end. Recently, DHS [link url=”https://amuedge.com/dhs-releases-principles-securing-iot/” title=”released a set of strategic principles”] aimed at helping groups and individuals increase security against Internet of Things (IoT) threats.
