North Korea severed the military hot-line with the South today in a continuing response to the recent UN sanctions that were levied against the hermit country. The escalation in rhetoric is nothing new, and there are other developments regarding the Korean peninsula that are far more important. Indeed, Pentagon spokesman George Little said that North Korea’s threats “followed a pattern designed to raise tensions.”

The commonly bizarre behavior of North Korea has been on full display in recent days as Pyongyang made multiple threats in response to a new round of UN sanctions. These sanctions were unanimously approved by the UN Security Council following last month’s test of a nuclear device. Indeed, North Korea has been testing and demonstrating its military advances as of late.

North Korea conducted their third nuclear test today reaching a seismic magnitude of approximately 5.1. This is quite higher than their previous two nuclear tests reaching a suspected yield of between 6-7 kilotons. Pyongyang stated at this test was of a miniature nuclear device; however we have no evidence to confirm that claim. Furthermore, some analysts are claiming that this may have been a device using enriched uranium.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un publically ordered the military to take “substantial and high-profile important state measures” to retaliate against the new sanctions that were levied by the UN Security Council last week – citing the U.S. specifically for spearheading the measure. The sanctions were proposed for the recent satellite launch undertaken by the North just a few weeks ago.
