The 2024 Space Education and Strategic Applications (SESA) Conference was much more than just another event with smart folks prophesizing about space. During this two-day virtual conference, leaders from government, the military and universities shared groundbreaking ideas and reflected on how space education and security are changing.
One of the biggest highlights of the 2024 SESA Conference was Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt.) John Bentivegna’s keynote address. Chief Bentivegna is a University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in political science. His story is proof that continuous learning can be useful in professional development, especially in a rapidly growing industry like space science.
Chief Bentivegna painted a vivid picture of what the U.S. Space Force is doing to keep America ahead in space. “The Space Force,” he explained, “is about making sure the world stays connected, that GPS keeps working and that life as we know it doesn’t miss a beat.” He broke down complex ideas in a way that made everyone realize just how much space security impacts daily life in ways we don’t always consider.
Global Space Partnerships and Strengthening Trust
During the SESA Conference, Chief Bentivegna also talked about the Space Force’s Combined Space Operations Initiative, a partnership that brings together 10 nations – including the U.S., Canada and Japan – to keep space peaceful. “We’re building partnerships, but we’re also building trust,” Chief Bentivegna noted.
He laid out how these alliances are crucial for countering rising threats from places like China and Russia, who have advanced their own space capabilities. “Space is contested – make no mistake about it. But if we work together, we can keep aggression at bay and maintain peace in the final frontier,” he observed.
The Space Economy Is Growing
Chief Bentivegna also shone a light on the growing space economy. According to a 2024 report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. space industry pumped over $131.8 billion into the nation’s GDP in 2022.
The space sector is growing faster than other industries, driving new jobs, tech breakthroughs and financial growth according to the World Economic Forum. “If we want to keep this economic engine running, we’ve got to protect what we’ve built up there,” Chief Bentivegna pointed out.
Shaping Tomorrow’s Space Professionals
Throughout the SESA Conference, the speakers stressed how today’s students are tomorrow’s trailblazers, ready to push the boundaries of what we know about space. Chief Bentivegna’s talk made it clear that the future of space must involve collaboration, national security, innovation and space education. The work being done now – whether it’s protecting satellites or teaching the next generation of leaders – will shape not only the future of space, but the future of life on Earth.
