A plane that landed at New York’s Kennedy Airport Wednesday morning, Sept. 5 has been quarantined after about 10 passengers aboard the return flight from Dubai became ill.
The Emirates flight landed at about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, and the airline confirmed in a tweet that “about 10 passengers” were attended to by local health authorities as a”precaution.” Initial reports regarding the flight pegged those feeling ill or with a fever at about 100.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is on scene, and reports that 521 were on the flight and that “approximately 100 passengers, including some crew on the flight, complained of illness including cough and some with fever.”
Eric Phillips, the press secretary for New York City, has been live tweeting the ordeal at Kennedy Airport and says that 432 people have been removed from the plane and cleared for travel but that eight others are being treated on scene.
A New York Police counterterrorism division reported that the incident appeared to be “medical,” and the New York Times reports that the NYPD, Port Authority, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and CDC remain on scene and investigating.
“At 9:12 a.m. today, Emirates Flight 203 from Dubai landed at JFK Airport with a report of multiple sick passengers,” Kennedy Airport reports in a news release. “The plane was taken to a location away from the terminal so that medical personnel from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could board the aircraft to evaluate the situation and provide immediate assistance before passengers deplane and are processed by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
“The PAPD and Port Authority airport operations staff are coordinating closely and providing support to the CDC and CBP as necessary. The CDC will provide further updates as they become available.” ___
