New Pre-Health Certificate for Healthcare Career Preparation

Healthcare professionals were in high demand before COVID-19 raced across the globe and fundamentally changed life as we know it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, that demand is projected to grow 15% over the next decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Approximately 2.4 million new jobs will be created, more than any other industry. As we progress through a dramatically altered 2021 and beyond, the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to present unprecedented challenges not only for the healthcare industry but also for unsurpassed growth and innovation.

As the vaccination rollout to stem the coronavirus pandemic continues and populations feel a semblance of hope, technology will continue to usher in industry change on an unprecedented scale from telemedicine to artificial intelligence to biotechnology. Education and training will be an essential component to building the larger and more skilled healthcare workforce needed to mitigate the existing pandemic and future healthcare public health crises.

“We’re going to see continuous change in the healthcare field over the next few years. Right now in nursing for instance, we’re experiencing a shortage of nurses and so one priority has to be expanding educational opportunities in that area,” emphasizes Marsha Sotelo, DNP, RN, CNE, CTN-B, who is the Department Chair for Nursing.

She adds, “We’re also going to see a lot of technological innovation across the board. In nursing, the approach will focus on more and more simulated clinicals.”

New Pre-Health Certificate Is Now Available

“The university’s new pre-health undergraduate certificate is designed to help students complete prerequisites quickly so they can meet qualification requirements to most nursing and other healthcare-related degree programs,” states Sotelo.

She adds, “It’s a very flexible online course that aligns with a broad range of programs and schools. Challenges ranging from insufficient educators due to a large number of retirements to limited clinical sites mean that we don’t have enough nurses and other healthcare providers in this country. COVID-19 has highlighted healthcare professionals and the fact that we need more preparation for another pandemic.”
