Feeling Apprehensive? Dive In, Don’t Procrastinate

As a student it is likely you have felt that wave of uneasiness when it comes to addressing a paper for class. Sometimes you may think you don’t know enough to write about the topic, or maybe you just cannot figure out how to conclude your argument. This can be perceived as excuses on your way to procrastinating. Instead of waiting for the epiphany to hit, dive into the content head first.

Even if writing isn’t your forte, you have no doubt developed better skills at relaying your thoughts through written word during your studies. Every excuse you make to avoid work brings you one day closer to the deadline. Take every opportunity you have to write down your responses for class.

Start off easy by opening a word processing document. Add the questions, or thesis, to the top of the page and write out your thoughts. Think of it as an internal dialogue. Once you are done you can see where your strengths are on the subject, and where you need to do some more research. Keep working on the document until you are finished, and edit as you go along. In my experience this approach keeps me motivated as I work through a problem. I can see the progress I’m making while I’m getting my assignment done for my class for that week. Find what works for you, and “just say no” to procrastinating.
