EDM Friday Briefing: Colorado Sheriff’s Deputy Shot and Killed

Emergency and disaster management briefing for January 26, 2018: A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by an assault suspect north of Denver, a man being held hostage in Texas was killed by FBI agents, a bank robber in a Detroit suburb held hostages for over four hours before surrendering, the engineer in the deadly Amtrak derailment said he mistook a wayside signal, one male student listed in stable condition is identified from the Kentucky school shooting, a man is killed in a police-involved shooting in Georgia, registration opened in San Francisco for seismic retrofit grants for eligible homeowners, and a South Korean hospital that erupted in a deadly fire on Friday did not have a sprinkler system.

  1. Adams County Sheriff’s deputy, Heath Gumm, 32, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/25/suspect-identified-in-shooting-death-colorado-sheriffs-deputy.html” title=”was shot and killed by an assault suspect”] very early Thursday morning north of Denver, Colorado, after police responded to an “assault call in progress.” A short search by deputy’s revealed a man in the area fitting the description and as the suspect fled, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/25/latest-court-files-22-year-old-held-in-deputys-death.html” title=”he pulled a handgun and fired at deputies”], striking deputy Gumm in the chest, who died from his injuries. The suspect, identified as Dreion Martise Dearing, 22, was taken into custody a short time later. Police are still searching for two people in connection with the early morning shooting.  

  2.  A man being held hostage following a home invasion in Conroe, Texas, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/25/texas-kidnapping-victim-shot-dead-in-fbi-operation.html” title=”was shot and killed by an FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) agent during a raid”] on the house where he was being held. Reports indicate that multiple people, including two children were inside the home where the raid took place. According to reports, the incident occurred when suspects entered the victim’s home, [link url=”http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/FBI-reportedly-involved-in-shooting-in-northeast-12524172.php?ipid=happening#item-85307-tbla-5″ title=”bound him with duct tape and pulled him from his home”], then later demanded a ransom.

  3. A robbery suspect is in custody following [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/25/police-suspected-robber-holding-hostages-inside-bank.html” title=”his attempt to rob a Canton Township bank in suburban Detroit, Michigan on Thursday”]. The suspect, armed with a handgun, had barricaded himself inside the bank with an unknown number of hostages by the time police arrived. [link url=”http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/wayne-county/2018/01/25/canton-bank-robbery/1067217001/” title=”The incident lasted over four hours”], with the suspect finally releasing his hostages before surrendering peacefully to police.  

  4. The investigation into the deadly Amtrak crash in Washington State last month reveals that [link url=”https://www.ntsb.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/mr20180125.aspx” title=”the engineer missed one wayside signal and mistook another signal”] before the 30 mph curve where the train derailed. The incident occurred because the train was traveling too fast when it entered the curve going nearly 80 mph. When the train derailed, [link url=”https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/engineer-deadly-amtrak-crash-mistook-signal-ahead-curve-n841101″ title=”several passenger cars fell onto I-5 below”], and a total of three people were killed and at least 70 more people were injured in the accident.

One student injured in the [link url=”https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/01/25/kentucky-school-shooting-boy-shot-face-stable-condition/1067553001/” title=”school shooting in Kentucky has been identified as Gage Smock”], who suffered a critical gunshot wound to the head and was the boyfriend of the female victim that was killed, Bailey Holt. The boy and another male student were listed in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, along with a male student who is in critical, but stable condition. Eighteen other students were also injured during the shooting, [link url=”https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/01/25/kentucky-school-shooting-suspect-appears-juvenile-court/1067166001/” title=”and the 15-year-old student suspect, whose identity has not yet been released”], is to be tried as an adult after being charged with at least two counts of murder.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/officer-fatally-shoots-armed-man-gas-station-georgia-52602053″ title=”the fatal shooting of a man at a gas station by Gwinnett County police early Thursday”]. Officers indicate that they were responding to the call of an armed man when they arrived at the gas station where a man had a firearm in his waistband. Police ordered the individual to drop the weapon, but instead of dropping it, [link url=”http://www.ajc.com/news/crime–law/breaking-injured-officer-involved-shooting/RfXV2urPX77FxGLrTy4v4N/” title=”he pulled it out and raised it at the officers”] causing  one of them to fire their weapon, striking the man. 

  7. Select residents in the San Francisco Bay Area may be eligible to [link url=”https://www.earthquakebracebolt.com/HomeownerRegistration” title=”receive seismic retrofit grants for homes built before 1979″], although other qualifications do apply. The grant provides up to $3,000 to help retrofit wood-framed homes in order to secure them in case of an earthquake. Typical costs for the retrofit range from $3,500 to $5,500 and include such things as [link url=”http://www.sfgate.com/news/bayarea/article/Registration-Open-For-Seismic-Retrofit-Grants-For-12521204.php” title=”bolting the house to the foundation, and placing bracing around the perimeter”]. [link url=”https://www.reuters.com/article/us-southkorea-fire/south-korean-hospital-blaze-kills-at-least-37-fleeing-patients-brave-flames-idUSKBN1FF04N” title=”A hospital blaze in Miryang, South Korea killed at least 37 and injured 140 more people”] when the structure caught fire around 7:30 a.m local time on Friday. Investigators believe the fire may have been electrical in nature, although the hospital had regular safety inspections and was built to government standards, including having fire extinguisher’s and emergency exits. However, [link url=”https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/25/asia/south-korea-hospital-fire/index.html” title=”the building was not required to have a sprinkler system”] because current fire codes do not require buildings six stories and under to have such systems. The deadly fire follows another blaze that killed 29 people last month and once again sparks concerns over current safety standards the exist across the country.
