China Strategic Control of another Canal in Western Hem?

Reuters just put out an interesting article on an “ordinary” billionaire from China, named Wang Jing.

Wang claims he’s not an agent of China:

“I know you don’t believe me. You believe there are people from the Chinese government in the background providing support. Why, in the end, is only Wang Jing out front?”

The above is a suspicion that Wang seeks to dispel regarding the $50 billion Interoceanic Grand Canal planned to be constructed in Nicaragua.

Since his birth I 1972, Wang says, “All these years I’ve lived a very ordinary life…I’m an ordinary guy.”

But Wang is no ordinary guy. He only started this canal project in 2012 which seeks to rival that of Nicaragua’s neighboring Panama Canal. Moreover, to obtain the deal, Wang had to come to agreement with the dictator for life Daniel Ortega and the Sandinista led government. This deal was a 50 year no-bid contract to someone that does not have the capital.

Chinese power elites President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and former leaders Jiang Zemin and Wen Jiabao have all been reported to have frequented Wang Jing’s Beijing Xinwei office. Wang also has a $3 billion Black Sea port operation and mentioned that he was still waiting to see how thing pan out there before the Nicaraguan canal can really get underway.

Also suspicious, Wang plans to raise only $300 million of his own capital and most of it will come from “cross-shareholding, bank lending and debt issuance” according to Reuters.

Maybe Wang really is just an international Chinese business heavy-weight with strong ties. Or maybe Wang is just a little more patriotic than he is letting on and China will be the real money and investment to some more strategic Central American real estate.
