Julie Wright recently interviewed American Military University’s (AMU) Vice President and Dean of Academic Outreach and Program Development, Dr. Chris Reynolds, on WJLA’s “Let’s Talk Live” show about preparing for natural disasters – including hurricane season.
Dr. Reynolds promoted EDM Digest – which he created in 2016 – as a “platform that allows emergency services providers and emergency managers around the country to come together to share their ideas.” He also highlighted AMU’s emergency and disaster management degree programs.
“We are scholar-practitioners…particularly in the online education arena,” he said of AMU’s students, alumni and faculty. Dr. Reynolds spoke about how many people connected to AMU actively handle and respond to natural disasters and other situations.
“Look at the [recent] tornadoes and the flooding that’s occurring,” stated Dr. Reynolds. “Our students are on the front line – right now – mitigating and dealing with those disasters…and so are their faculty members.”
Wright pointed out that Dr. Reynolds is, himself, a practitioner and educator in the field of emergency and disaster management – giving AMU students access to his “unique skill set.”
Many states are already preparing for an active hurricane season by taking the proactive measures required to keep citizens and structures safe. Dr. Reynolds is no stranger to hurricanes. He lives in a hurricane zone and has responded to countless hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and other natural – and man-made – disasters.
“I actually reside in the state of Florida,” said Dr. Reynolds. “And disasters aren’t necessarily localized to just one small town; they can be wide-sweeping…the disasters themselves provide the opportunity – the canvas, if you will – for learning to occur.”
About Dr. Chris Reynolds
Dr. Reynolds is a certified emergency manager (CEM) through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program (EFO) and a Chief Fire Officer designee (CFO) through the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). Additionally, he holds the Military Emergency Management Senior Specialist (MEMS) badge. Dr. Reynolds is also a registered paramedic in the state of Florida; his career in emergency and disaster management spans more than three decades.
