Al-Shabaab Returns to Mogadishu

By William Tucker

Earlier this month, on the 10th to be precise, I noted that the Somali militant group al-Shabaab had elected to abandon the territory it held in Mogadishu. Reports today indicate that the group has returned to the capital, albeit in limited fashion. It is true that the leadership of al-Shabaab had said they would return, but they didn’t articulate what type of presence they would reestablish. Judging by the few available reports it appears as if guerilla warfare will be the tactic of choice. At this point it is still very early and this development could segue into full return by al-Shabaab. As I wrote on the 10th, al-Shabaab is not anywhere near defeat and the retreat was, indeed, only temporary.
