Al-Qaeda Plot Disrupted in Spain

By William Tucker

Spanish authorities have arrested three men for allegedly planning a terrorist attack against Gibraltar or the European mainland. Unfortunately, not much information about the alleged plot has been disclosed to the press other than some information on the individuals and the areas they had visited. The names of the accused have not been officially released, however two are described as having come from Russia – Chechnya, more specifically – and one was from Turkey. All three men had trained in terrorist training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan prior to their emigration to Spain. Media reports on the arrests also indicate that the men had training with explosives.

According to law enforcement, the men had used a paraglider to fly around Gibraltar leading to speculation that the men were planning some sort of airborne attack. Indeed, a search of one of the men’s homes led to police seizing explosive materials and user manuals for light aircraft. Strangely, light aircraft don’t typically have the capability to carry any sort of useful payload that would allow for an effective airborne attack. It is more likely that the aircraft was being used to conduct surveillance of potential targets. As previously stated, there isn’t much information to go on at the present time, but if something interesting does come to light we’ll be sure to pass it along.
