We’ve all done it, probably more than once.

At some time during school, whether it was for a high school science quiz or a university exam in broadcast law (I was a Radio/Television major), we stayed up half the night cramming for it. Sitting up in bed or slouched over the kitchen table, reading and re-reading the same chapters over and over, hoping what we absorbed would stick in our brains long enough to get us through that test in the morning.

And maybe it did. But did we learn anything?

According to two Washington University psychologists who have written a book on the subject, the answer is: no.
