100,000 Jobs Mission

Despite the difficulty of the job market, there certainly has been a renewed effort put into hiring veterans and ensuring that they end their military careers with a better understanding of how to transition into the private sector work force. A number of both private and public initiatives have been launched to address veteran unemployment – one such initiative is the 100,000 Jobs Mission. Launched in March 2011 by JPMorgan Chase, the mission has expanded well beyond its original scope, and JPMorgan Chase has been joined by a large number of respected names: Amazon.com, American Airlines, Johnson & Johnson and Wells Fargo are only a short sampling of these.

The original goal in 2011 was to form a coalition of companies with the intent of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020. Amazingly 100,000 Jobs Mission has already provided jobs for 92,869 as of September 30th, 2013. The mission is well ahead of schedule, and continuing on strong. Alongside the release of the current number of hired veterans, the 100,000 Jobs Mission has also rolled out an employer led web job search, known as the Veteran Talent Exchange (VTX), for veterans and their spouses. This is accessible through the mission’s site at www.100000jobsmission.com or at the VTX’s own website, www.VTX.jobs.

The provided search function can be used either by keyword or more usefully, can match a veteran’s MOS/NEC/AFSC directly to job listings, and an optional location search can pinpoint jobs in a veteran’s own area (or, if you are willing to relocate, leave it blank to return all jobs with your keyword or MOS). The format is intuitive and easy to use – and most importantly, even a quick search reveals thousands of job listings. For my own zip code, I was able to pull 2051 jobs posted within the last week within 25 miles! This is an excellent alternative to job search sites like Monster, geared specifically for veterans, and not only understands but desires the unique skill sets that veterans have to offer.
